A Message from Mr. Wilson September 2011September 6, 2011
Dear Parents and Guardians:
I hope everyone had a great summer. We are excited to have everyone back at school and look forward to another successful year.
The CSAP scores are available and Running Creek did very well on last year’s tests. We improved in 8 out 10 tests. I invite you to visit the Colorado Department of Education’s web site, http://www.cde.state.co.us/ , and see how RCE compares to our neighboring schools.
Running Creek is off to another great start this school year. The year officially started with the Transition/Assessment Days August 15th – 17th. This time allowed our teachers to meet one on one with your student to assess his/her reading level and make a personal connection. Additionally, we were able to take care of all the tasks that otherwise would have taken instructional time. All the teachers agree that Assessment Days are a huge benefit to them and hopefully to your students as well.
The data that was collected during the Assessment Days will be analyzed along with last year’s CSAP scores, MAP tests and report card information to plan for better lesson differentiation for each student. Our goal once again this year is to differentiate lessons to improve the growth of all students. Differentiated instruction involves providing students with different avenues for acquiring content, processing, constructing, or making sense of ideas, and for developing teaching strategies so that all students in the classroom can learn effectively, regardless of differences in their ability. This year we will continue to utilize collaboration time on Thursday mornings to work together to improve the teaching at Running Creek and ultimately improve the academic growth and performance of our students.
Public schools in the state of Colorado are held accountable based upon overall achievement levels and student growth performance based solely on CSAP scores (at the elementary level). Starting last year, the state produced a School Performance Framework (SPF) and not a School Accountability Report (SAR). The SPF measures 3 performance indicator categories: Academic Achievement, Academic Growth and Academic Growth Gaps based on CSAP data. The SAR only measured proficiency. Running Creek is above the state average and has met the expectations in academic achievement and growth for reading, writing, math and science. Based on the initial 1 year report, RCE also met the Growth Gaps criteria. Running Creek Elementary is rated at the Performance Plan status (highest level from CDE) based on the 2011 SPF.
However, one measure does not ensure a valid picture of students’ overall abilities and needs in a content area. At Running Creek we look at a “body of evidence” to determine a child’s overall academic performance in reading, writing, math and science that include the following: assessment scores based on standardized/norm referenced tests (including MAP, DRA and DIBELS), classroom assessments and report card performance, and CSAP scores. By utilizing this data and collaborating with colleagues in the building and across the district, we hope to further improve the academic growth and performance of every student at Running Creek.
Sincerely,
Jim Wilson, Principal
